Dr. Hazem Elariny

Surgical experience.
A scientific perspective.

Dr. Elariny’s background combines general surgery with doctoral study in biochemistry and molecular biology. His interest in adipose tissue informs the Adipaucity concept: consider the role and distribution of fat as well as the change a patient wants to make.

Board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Education & experience

  • MD, Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, 1990.
  • General surgery residency at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation; chief resident, 1995–1996.
  • PhD, Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, 2000.
  • Experience in general, minimally invasive, bariatric and cosmetic surgery, and in surgical fellowship leadership.

Research into the biology of fat

Dr. Elariny is a coauthor of peer-reviewed studies examining visceral adipose tissue, the activity of genes within it and its relationship with metabolic disease. This work gives patients a way to explore the scientific background behind his interest in adipose tissue.

Gene activity in visceral fat

A 2005 study compared visceral-fat samples from people with and without obesity and identified differences in genes involved in metabolism, transport and cell-cycle processes.

Adipose signals and insulin resistance

A 2006 study examined gene expression of leptin, resistin and adiponectin in adipose tissue from people with obesity, fatty liver disease and insulin resistance.

The relationship between fat and liver tissue

A 2007 study investigated gene-expression patterns in liver and visceral-fat tissue in patients with fatty liver disease.

These studies concern metabolic biology. A cosmetic procedure recommendation still depends on the individual examination, goals and risks.

From weight change to contour planning

Dr. Elariny’s practice spans bariatric surgery and cosmetic contouring. A change in weight can leave a new set of concerns: a hanging abdominal apron, loose skin around the arms or thighs, or fullness that affects the way clothing fits. Each concern needs its own anatomical assessment.

At Pinnacle Surgical Group, consultation brings those details into the treatment plan. Liposuction, skin removal and abdominal contour procedures require different decisions about the tissue to treat, scars and recovery.
